PERSPECTIVE

I was really proud of my 20/20 vision growing up. I didn’t have to worry about being
extra responsible with glasses and I didn’t have to face my fear of poking contact
lenses directly onto the surface of my eyeballs. After acing my last required eye exam
as a high school student, I embraced my perfect vision, continued to eat lots of carrots,
and moved on with my life.

Years later I got married, moved in with my husband, and within one month of living
together he blurted out “You need glasses!” I was shocked and got defensive: “No I
don’t! I’ve always had perfect vision! Why would you say that?” My new husband said
it wasn’t normal for a twenty-three year old to be using the largest font size available
on the iPhone. He pointed out how I hold books weirdly far from my face when I’m
reading. He said he noticed I type emails in size 18 font, then change them back to
your average 12 point font before sending them out. I scheduled an eye appointment
and sure enough left with a prescription and reading glasses!

I put my new glasses on and couldn’t believe it. The words in my books were so crisp.
Size 12 font was suddenly sufficient for reading and writing without any strain on my
eyes. I realized the world could appear so different and beautiful just by looking
through these special lenses.

The same kind of epiphany takes place when you begin to believe in Jesus and accept
him as your Savior. The world starts to look different. The way Christians see, think
about, and interact with the world changes when they begin to look at things through
the lens of God’s truth. This is referred to as having a “Biblical Worldview.”

READ Mark 8:22-25
“And they came to Bethsaida. And some people brought to [Jesus] a blind man and
begged him to touch him. And he took the blind man by the hand and led him out of
the village, and when he had spit on his eyes and laid his hands on him, he asked
him, “Do you see anything?” And he looked up and said, “I see people, but they look
like trees, walking.” Then Jesus laid his hands on his eyes again; and he opened his
eyes, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly.”

This passage shows Jesus miraculously healing a blind man’s sight, but it was not
immediate. Jesus first opened his eyes so he could see things he had never been able
to see before, but they were fuzzy. This is how new Christians see the world too. When you’re first getting to know Jesus, you immediately see life better than you ever have!
You experience forgiveness, possess more faith, and feel more hope. But you still have
questions about what you’re seeing. Accepting Jesus into your life does change
everything immediately, but Jesus is not done with you yet. Becoming a Christian is
just the beginning of your journey through life as a follower of Jesus.

It was the second time that Jesus touched the blind man that his sight was perfectly
restored. This wasn’t because Jesus didn’t have enough power to heal him in just one
touch. I think it was to demonstrate an important principle. We need to be touched by
Jesus repeatedly in order to fully develop our vision the way He intended.

In order to develop a Biblical Worldview where your mindset, perspective, and
decisions are based on God’s truth, you need to continuously get closer to Jesus.
Read the Bible. Spend time with God in prayer. Go to church and youth group. Get
involved in a Christian community. Read books about the Christian faith. Over time, you
will develop a godly perspective.

When you face failure, you will remember God has a great purpose for you.
When you are lacking confidence, you will know God created you beautifully and
wonderfully in His own image.
When you are lost in uncertainty, you will feel Jesus’ constant presence and guidance.
When you accomplish huge successes, you will give the glory to God for your unique
gifts and talents.

Deciding to follow Jesus is an incredible and amazing moment that will change your life
forever. But God has even more in store for you far beyond that! He wants to continue
to transform you through every encounter you have with Him. Life will not get easier
when you grow closer to Jesus, but it will become more clear. Fix your eyes on Jesus
and He will fix your perspective in life.
